Saturday is Student-Senior Day at the Gardnerville Museum. At 11 a.m. only, Pony Express Re-riders Bob Moore and Mike Murphy will be at the museum. Bob will have his horse Casey with him. Bob and Casey will demonstrate the use of the mochila that held the mail. Also, T-shirts and books on the Pony Express will be available for purchase.

The first place winner for the May Photo Contest is Merry Muller of Gardnerville. Her photo of Sorensen's barn captures the beauty of the Valley and the importance of preserving these historic barns.  Our runner up is Anne Bothwell's photo of antique tools mounted on the side of a barn.  Stop into the Gardnerville Museum and see these winning photos on the May 2010 calendar pages. They are displayed near the front desk.

Because May is Historic Preservation Month and because of our own annual barn tour, our judges decided to reward all who took great photos on the barn tour. In the very near future, many of your great photos will be featured in our Main Street Bookstore as photo note cards for sale to our visitors. Congratulations to all who entered our May contest.

Of course, that means that the June contest is now open. Start looking for that perfect thing that means June in Douglas County to you. There is the remaining snow on the mountains, the flooded fields during irrigation, the towering thunder clouds and of course Carson Valley Days. You have a lot to choose from and plenty of time to enter the June contest.

Thursday is the next in the Lecture Series. Frankye Craig will speak on the Donner Party. Ms. Craig is the author of three books and a Donner historian. Beginning with this lecture, there will be a $3 charge for all non-members. Historical Society members will be admitted for free.

The Douglas County Young Chautauquans will be performing 5 p.m. June 17 at Mormon State Park in Genoa. This event is free of charge and kicks off the calendar of summer events we have planned for you.

If you have any questions about anything mentioned here, please call the Douglas County Historical Society at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Visit our Web site at www.historicnevada.org. Remember, DCHS and its two museums, the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville and the Genoa Courthouse Museum, do not receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
