Friends of Molly Lahlum raised $2,000 at a barbecue and after-hours swim May 30 at Carson Valley Swim Center.

Molly, 15, was a member of the Douglas Dolfins and Douglas High School swim teams. She died April 23.

"There's something about this Valley that just amazes me," said Susan Govan, a longtime swim coach who helped organize the event.

"It was a rip-roaring success," she said. "About 120 people showed up and in two hours, we made roughly $2,000."

The money will go to assist the Lahlum family with medical bills.

Govan said one couple paid $30 each for the hamburger barbecue, then another $30 each for seconds.

"The generosity is beyond belief," she said.

Govan had described the evening as a "celebration of Molly's life at her favorite playground."

"Molly was more than just a swimmer," Govan said. "She touched everyone's life."

Govan said anyone who wanted to contribute could contact her at the swim center or call 782-8841.
