Deputies John Lenz and Stuart Shipley were sworn in Monday by Douglas County Sheriff Ron Pierini as the two newest members of the department.
The appointments are a culmination of several months of testing and evaluation of the two applicants, including written examination, physical agility, oral interview, background investigation, investigative interview, psychological evaluation, polygraph and medical examinations.
Lenz earned a bachelor's degree in physics and master's degree in music.
Shipley earned master's degrees in education and English.
The new deputies will undergo a 12-week jail training program to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to perform as a custodial deputies.
They will attend a 16-week peace officer academy at the Nevada State Peace Officer Standards and Training facility in Carson City.
Family members and friends of the two new deputies attended the swearing-in ceremony on Monday.
