Clarence 'Red' Edward Sumner

The rosary will be noon Friday at St. Gall Catholic Church for seven-year Gardnerville resident Clarence 'Red' Edward Sumner, 86, who died May 28, 2009. The memorial service is at 12:30 p.m. at the church.

Born July 24, 1922, in San Luis Obispo, Calif., to Frank Moreno and Edna Anderson Moreno, he was the youngest of three sons.

He attended San Jose High School in San Jose, Calif. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps 1st Marine Division where he served from 1941-1945 in World War II. He later worked for Sunlite Bread Co. and Mothers Cake and Cookie Co., from which he later retired.

He married Margaret Harris Sumner in Saratoga, Calif., in 1948. The couple was married for 56 years, and lived in San Jose, Lodi, Sonora, Coos Bay, Ore., before they moved to Gardnerville.

After moving to Gardnerville, Mr. Sumner became a member of St. Gall Catholic Church. He was a golfer and formerly worked at the Eagle Valley Golf Course which he thoroughly enjoyed for a few summers.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; and brothers Jack and Richard Sumner.

He is survived by three daughters Susan (Mike) Robinson of Carlsbad, Calif., Jeanne (Ron) Todd of San Jose and Diane (Michael) Pollock of South Lake Tahoe; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
