June 19, 1914

'Borax' Smith has disposed of his Death Valley borax properties to London capitalists for approximately $4,000,000, according to a cablegram recently received in San Francisco from Mr. Smith, who is in London. With the passing from Smith's possession of the famous deposits which made him the Borax King, the control of the borax field in America has been transferred to the British syndicate, which now has become absolute master of the borax production of the world.

80 years ago

June 21, 1929

C. O. Dangberg of Minden was among those of this section who attended the formal opening of the Tioga road last Saturday. He reports a record breaking crowd at the ceremonies, which were attended by the California and Nevada highway officials and the Sierra Club of California.

June 18, 1959

Photo captions. For the second consecutive year the Windmill Dairy float, designed and built by Mrs. Pete Borda, was the grand prize winner in the Carson Valley Days parade. This year's winning entry depicted a colorful roulette wheel and stacks of silver dollars in keeping with the silver centennial theme.

Best cowgirl in dress outfit was the title awarded Miss Loa Stewart in the Carson Valley Days parade last week. Miss Stewart wore a black and white outfit that perfectly matched her beautiful horse.

June 14, 1984

Douglas County will be asking to approve plans for a manufacturing plant that will annually produce 44 million containers of flan, a caramel custard dessert popular in Europe and South America. Flanex Corp. would have its western U.S. manufacturing center in an industrial-zoned area off Johnson Lane.

It would consume about one-fourth of Carson Valley's milk production in making the high quality dessert, which consists of fresh milk, eggs and sugar.

Richard Bryan, D-Nevada, to help kick off an affordable house program in the Gardnerville Ranchos. Twenty-four homes will be built in this phase of the program. The check represents a $357,930 contribution from the federal government for costs of the home to be built by the homeowners.
