10 Tigers earn press postseason honors

The Sierra Nevada Media Group, which consists of seven newspapers and associated Web sites in Northern Nevada and California, recently released its postseason honors teams for baseball and softball. Athletes covered by the Nevada Appeal, North Lake Tahoe Bonanza, Lahontan Valley News, Sierra Sun, Tahoe Daily Tribune and The Record-Courier were eligible for selection. The teams are as follows:

P Tyler May, Douglas - May was the Sierra League's Pitcher of the Year. He went 8-0 on the year and broke Shawn Estes' school record for career wins at 21. He had 74 strikeouts and 19 walks in 12 appearances. At the plate, he had 10 doubles, two triples and 11 home runs to go with 35 RBIs.

P Matt Rutledge, Carson - Rutledge was the Sierra League co-Player of the Year, along with Damonte Ranch's Cody Stevens. He batted .538 with a .731 slugging percentage in league play. Rutledge carried a 1.77 ERA in league playm striking out 45 and winning four games.

P David Charles, Carson - Charles led the Sierra League with five wins and 36.2 innings pitched. He had 32 strikeouts in league play and carried a 3.44 ERA.

P Justin Vosburgh, Truckee - The senior No. 1 starter was voted to the Northern 3A All-League first team. His six wins ranks second in the Northern 3A and his 2.53 ERA ranks fifth. With the bat, he hit .384 with three home runs, two triples, seven doubles and 28 RBIs. He's also a threat on the base paths, swiping 12 bags.

C Beau Davis, Douglas - Davis was one of the top defensive catchers in Northern Nevada and he tied for the league lead in sacrifice hits. He'll be most remembered for his walk-off single in the Northern 4A Regional championship game to beat Reno 4-3.

INF Tyler Hoelzen, Douglas - Hoelzen posted a 6-2 record on the mound with 64 strikeouts and 18 walks. The two-time first-team All-Sierra League pitcher was a solid defensive first baseman and carried a big bat, hitting five home runs, two doubles, a triple and knocking in 27 RBIs.

INF Mike Fagan, Truckee - The senior cleanup hitter was voted to the Northern 3A All-League first team. He finished the regular season with a league-high .571 batting average, .627 on-base percentage and 18 stolen bases. His .778 slugging percentage is second highest in the league.

INF Tim Rudnick, Douglas - Rudnick was named to the first-team All-Sierra team for the second consecutive year, driving in 35 runs and hitting seven doubles. Rudnick also went 3-0 on the mound with one save as the Tigers' primary closer. He had 28 strikeouts in nine appearances.

INF Kyle Stone, Carson - Stone batted .400 in league play with 22 hits, earning second-team all-league status.

INF Derek Holmgren, South Tahoe - Holmgren batted .356 with three doubles, one triples, one home run and 12 runs scored.

OF Brett Valley, Carson - The first-team All-Sierra League honoree tied for the league league in sacrifices with three and was an all-around tough out at the top of the Senators' lineup. He also stole eight stolen bases.

OF Nick Warner, Whittell - Warner batted .486 and was a first-team all-league honoree for the state 2A runner-ups.

OF Andy Fiske, Fallon - Fiske batted .316 on the year with 23 RBIs, two doubles, three triples, a home run and 15 runs scored.

Utility Paul Cagle, Carson - Cagle batted .447 in league play with six doubles. He also carried a .527 on-base percentage.

DH Troy Torres, Douglas - Torres earned his second first-team All-Sierra League nod after belting four doubles, a triple, three home runs and 14 RBIs. He carried a .426 batting average.

P Stephanie Harper, Douglas - Harper finished her career as Douglas' all-time leader in career wins at 71. The Sierra League Player of the Year went 18-8 on the year with 140 strikeouts (440 career) and 84 walks. She also had 10 doubles, three home runs and 23 RBIs.

P Kate Pinder, Fallon - Pinder pitched 94.1 innings on the year, carrying a 1.56 ERA with 90 strikeouts, 34 walks and 27 earned runs. Opponents batted only .185 against her.

C Sara Parsons, Fallon - Parsons was an impressive 1.000 behind the plate in fielding percentage, allowing only three passed balls. She hit .345 with four home runs, five doubles, two triples and 24 RBIs.

INF Morgan Blomstrom, Douglas - Blomstrom had a breakout year for the Tigers, driving in 28 runs and belting eight doubles while batting .458.

INF Daria Leid, Carson - Leid was a first-team all-league honoree.

INF Kaycie Jones, Truckee - The junior catcher earned Northern 3A All-League honorable mention recognition filling in at an unfamiliar position. Truckee's cleanup hitter led her team in most offensive categories, with a .389 average, a .483 on-base percentage, 21 RBIs and 25 runs. She had two home runs, two triples and seven doubles.

INF Emily Weaver, Douglas - Weaver earned first-team All-Sierra League honors for the third consecutive year, hitting 10 doubles, one triple, three home runs and a team-leading 29 RBIs.

INF Jenny Rechel, Fallon - The freshman hit .467 on the year with five home runs, 11 doubles, two triples and 37 RBIs.

OF Brittany Barcellos, South Tahoe - Barellos was a first-team all-league honoree.

OF Maddy Gilbert, Douglas - Gilbert finished the year with 17 RBIs, a double and a triple, but earned first-team all-league honors for her knack for timely hitting and getting on base. She batted .430 on the year.

OF Tori McCunn, Incline

Utility Christina Lane, North Tahoe - The senior co-captain was voted to the Northern 2A All-League second team. She led the Northern 2A with a .605 average. Also leads the league in slugging, at .884, and on-base percentage, at .717. She has 29 RBIs, which ranks third best in league. She split time between shortstop and pitcher for the Lakers.

Utility Katrina Morgan, Douglas - Morgan batted .375 on the year with three home runs, three triples, eight doubles and 24 RBIs.

Designated hitter Cassie Vondrak, Carson - Vondrak earned first-team all-league honors.
