The deadline for entering photos into the June photo contest is 4 p.m. June 30. Bring them to the Gardnerville museum or e-mail them to the address below. We'll announce the winner in the July 3 column.
June is the month for high school reunions. Our exhibit committee has been busy in the changing gallery adding a Douglas High School exhibit. As most of you know, the Gardnerville museum was originally Douglas County High School. This new exhibit features photos from the classes of 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958 and 1962. The class of 1959 is on exhibit in a case in the lobby as this is their 50th reunion year.
One full wall features a pictorial history of Douglas County High School. Come in and check out your class if you're a graduate. If not, come in and see what it was like when this building housed the high school. Even if this isn't your high school, the exhibit is sure to bring back memories.
Were you or your parents were graduates of Douglas High and do you have any old year books? We are missing several years' editions and would love to complete our collection. The ones we are missing are posted on the wall of the Van Sickle Research Library. The volumes we do have are there for you to enjoy.
The next Douglas County Historical Society summer second swap meet is 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 27. Call today and arrange for booth space for only $10. If you don't want to sell, plan on coming out to buy. The next swap meets are July 11 and July 25.
There will be no Student-Senior Day in July as Saturday is July 4th. The lecture series on July 9 features Laurie Hickey speaking about the Trail to the Promised Land through Carson Valley. The lecture starts at 7 p.m. and admission is $3 to non-DCHS members and free for members.
The next Student-Senior Day is Aug. 1, with showing of "Chicken Every Sunday" at 2 p.m. Our annual Taste of the Towns follows the movie. Tickets for the Taste of the Towns event are $20 for DCHS members or $25 for non-members. You will also be able to pre-order your copy of the 2010 DCHS calendar at the Taste of the Towns this year. We'll have order forms and all the winning photos on display for you to see that night.
For any questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
