Woman jailed for probation violation

Two days after she was granted deferred sentencing, a 35-year-old South Lake Tahoe woman was jailed in Carson City for testing positive for cocaine, marijuana and prescription drugs.

District Judge Dave Gamble ordered Nokomis Murin to spend the next week in Douglas County Jail without bail before a hearing July 7.

"I need you to be in custody for a little while," Gamble said. "I saw that same haughty, self-righteous look in your eye before when you fired your other lawyer. Until you realize you're the bad guy in this story, you're not going to be OK."

Murin pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance, cocaine. In exchange for her plea, the district attorney's office dismissed charges of forgery, grand larceny and embezzlement.

She was given a deferred sentence June 23 and ordered to pay $4,575 restitution as part of three years probation.

Murin's lawyer, Derrick Lopez, said his client finally accepted the reality of her drug addiction and wanted to make Western Nevada Regional Drug Court a condition of her diversion.

"She knows her future depends on being drug-free," Lopez said.

Gamble told her to write a letter why he should support the diversion.

"Unless I see that change, you will be sentenced without the benefit of one of these programs," Gamble said.

"This is a serious come-uppance for Ms. Murin and maybe got her attention," he said. "It doesn't mean that recovery is not possible, but that depends on Ms. Murin."
