We have another great winner for the Douglas County Historical Society's February photo contest. Congratulations to Anne Bothwell for her winning photo, "Young Ones." Runner-up is Dean Ward of Wellington. Please stop into the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville to see these outstanding photos.
Of course, this means that the March photo contest is now underway. Please enter even if you have entered before and not been one of the winners. All of your photos are wonderful and we are grateful for your interest in photographing our county. As far as we are concerned, your photos are all winners.
Now that we are in March, we are starting our celebration of Women in History. Saturday is our presentation of "A Portrait of a Pioneer Lady" on Student-Senior Day. The characters discuss various aspects of life in Carson Valley around the 1890s. They talk about what they ate, where they worked and what they did with the long, dark evenings before gas lighting.
The performances are held in the downstairs meeting room at 11 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. Admission is free for all students accompanied by an adult and all seniors 65 and over. Weather permitting, Bea Fettic Jones, one of the characters in the play, will be there for the 11 a.m. performance. She will be interviewed and that interview will be taped for our archives.
Today is also the deadline for nominations for the historical society's 2009 Women in History project. Our aim is to honor those women who have contributed to the history of Douglas County in some way over their lifetimes. Women may not have gone off to war or conquered mountains, but they were a great part of the history of our country. The reception will be held on March 28, and is open to the public. Admission is free.
The exhibit committee has been busy over the winter months, cleaning, rearranging, sorting, building and making all of our exhibits better. At Gardnerville, they have been working in the Washoe and the Women in History rooms. Student-Senior Day in April will feature Lynda Shoshone and an expert guided tour of the Washoe Room. The exhibit committee is also getting Genoa ready for its May 2 opening. More about those plans in future columns.
If you have any questions about anything mentioned here, please call the Douglas County Historical Society at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Visit our Web site at www.historicnevada.org. Remember, DCHS and its two museums, the Gardnerville museum and the Genoa Court House Museum, do not receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
