The Carson Valley Community Theatre Group is proud to present "Hollywood Arms," a play about Carol Burnett, the world famous comedienne who made comedy out of life and gave way to a rising star. The comedy/drama is scheduled for April 10, 11 and 12 and April 17, 18, 19 at the CVIC Hall on Esmeralda in Minden.

"Hollywood Arms" is the true story of comedienne Burnett and her humble beginnings in Hollywood " land of dreams. The Hollywood Arms is the apartment building where she lived in the hills of Hollywood. The landmark Hollywoodland sign is perched on the hill above. The play was based on Burnett's 1986 memoir, "One More Time," and co-written with her daughter, Carrie Hamilton.

Three generations of women share a one room apartment in a run-down building just off Hollywood and Vine and in such close quarters tempers flare and comments bounce off the wall in a way that will remind you of Burnett's sharp wit and comedic talent. The characters are a pill-popping, Christian Scientist grandmother; a distant mother struggling with her own dreams as she drowns her ambitions in a bottle; and a young girl who finds her solace on the rooftop of their rundown building where she creates her own world.

First you'll meet the young girl who has yet to become the star you remember. Just what makes that comic wit turn on to the megawatt smile and knowing wink that can only be the Carol Burnett we know? You'll experience the building of her character as she grows up and the humor she uses to quell her own heartbreak. The story explores each of the women as they experience love, heartache and the pursuit of a dream as a budding star finds her voice.

The project was bittersweet for Burnett, as Carrie Hamilton was coping with lung and brain cancer while writing the play. Sadly, Carrie passed away before the play's run on Broadway in 2002. The play is a testament to the relationship the mother/daughter team had and the love they shared. A portion of the proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society in honor of Carrie Hamilton.
