50 Douglas teens to participate in legislative anti-smoking day

The Partnership of Community Resources is planning an event Wednesday at the Nevada State Legislature in recognition of Kick Butts Day 2009.

Approximately 50 Douglas County middle and high school students will be taking the day to "Stand Up... Speak Out and Advocate" against big tobacco.

The event is 9:45 a.m. to 2 p.m., and is sponsored by the Partnership of Community Resources and Students Taking on Prevention

It will be held in the Nevada State Legislature. Recognition by our legislators is at 10 a.m. in room 1214 (room could change) with a proclamation being presented to our youth.

Students will attempt to inflate 1,200 balloons in front of the Legislature Building in recognition of the 1,200 Americans that die from tobacco each day .

There will be a silent memorial in the first floor foyer in memory of the 1,200 Americans that die each day.

Students will perform "Prevention Through Movement" at 10:15 a.m. for legislators in room 1214. Information about tobacco and smoke-free rocks will be distributed to all offices.

"Prevention Through Art" stenciled tobacco messages will be displayed on the front grounds. Progressive messaging will be displayed along Highway 395.

A balloon release in memory will take place at 1:30 p.m. at the front grounds of the Legislature.

There will be a banner across Highway 395 in downtown Carson City in memory of the 1,200 Americans during the week.
