Fallon's first high school conference baseball game in the Sierra League was
what the Wave did not want Thursday afternoon at the Ed Arciniega Athletic
Complex.
Douglas High School roared into Fallon to blank Fallon, 13-0, behind the
two-hit pitching of southpaw Tyler Hoelzen. Douglas improves to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in league play while Fallon falls to 0-1 in league, 1-4 overall.
Both teams resume play on Saturday in Minden with a 10 a.m. doubleheader.
The Tigers' lefty struck out nine and walked two. Reliever Michael Whalin
ran into some problems and loaded the bases in the seventh inning, but a
game-ending double play stopped Fallon from ruining the shutout.
Fallon's lone bright spot came in the bottom of the seventh when Jordan
Tracy ripped the first pitch he saw for a triple down the right-field line.
Teryn Smith followed with a walk.
Pinch hitter Drew Corbin then walked to load the bases before Willie Brewster lifted a foul ball for the first out, and Nico Parsely's soft liner was caught at first base, doubling Corbin to end the game.
The Tigers gave Hoelzen all the run support he needed with a pair of runs in
the first inning. Kameron Van Winkle slammed a two-run triple off losing
pitcher John Ingersoll.
Douglas added a run in the second inning on Tyler May's single.
Beau Davis drove in a run with a single in the third inning to make the
score 4-0. Ingersoll uncorked a wild pitch for the visitor¹s fifth run.
May had his second RBI of the game when he took a 1-0 pitch and hit it into
left field. The ball bounced away from the left fielder, allowing one run to
score and May to scoot around the bases to cross the plate ahead of the
throw.
The only quiet inning for Douglas came in the fifth when Ingersoll retired
the side without surrendering a run.
Ingersoll left the game after walking the first batter in the sixth.
Reliever Dakota Allegre entered the game. He yielded two RBI singles.
The Tigers' Rudnick produced a two-run double in the seventh, while Whalin
and Dan King each knocked in a run.
