Track & Field: Lady Tigers stay unbeaten on the year

The Douglas high girls' track team kept its torrid pace up to open the year, winning the conference four-way meet at Reed High on Saturday by 53 points over second-place Hug.


Senior thrower Jessica Waggoner highlighted the day by shattering her own school records with a throw of 39-0 in the shot put and 131-3 in the discus.


The Northern 4A records in the two events are 44-06.75 and 143-02.5 respectively.


Freshman Katie Dry won the 100 with a time of 13.4 (school record is 12.3); sophomore Kyra Barth won the 300 hurdles at 51.6 and Natasha Brown won the long jump at 15-6.5.


It was a banner day for the Lady Tiger relay teams as the 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 won their respective races and the 4x100 team took second.


On the boys' side, junior Jordan Cruz came close to capturing a school record of his own, running an 11.1 in the 100 Saturday to win the event. He beat out Hug's Duke Williams and Reed's John VonSchimmelman to win the race. The school record dates back to 1996 and is held by Josh Jacobs at 10.8.


Senior Brad Boyd won the 1,600 with a time of 4:48.0 and took second in the 800 at 2:07.08. Scott Lococo won the 3,200, Nick Maestretti took second in the high jump and the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams took second in their events.
