Photos of Douglas County needed for calendar

The Douglas County Historical Society's Women in History reception honoring this year's seven nominees is 2 p.m. Saturday. The presentation recognizes the ladies for all the incredible things they have done for Douglas County.

March 31 is the deadline for entering the March photo contest. We need more entries and last weekend's spring snowstorm gave new photo opportunities. Wasn't that typical of March in Douglas County? Send in what best represents March and we'll print the winning photo in the column.

Coming on April 4 is our next Student-Senior Day, where admission to the Gardnerville museum is free for all seniors and all students accompanied by an adult. If you have never visited this museum, that is the day to stop by. There are guided tours available and we always have an interesting program presented, also free, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

This month's program features the newly renovated and improved Washoe Room with explanations of the exhibits and stories by Lynda Shoshone, program coordinator for the Washoe Language Program. This program will teach us all about the Washoe people and their interesting heritage.

The Student-Senior Day on May 2 will be the first at the Genoa Court House Museum. We will honor Snowshoe Thompson with anecdotes about his life and the singing of the Norwegian National Anthem in Norwegian. Hopefully, Eileen Bianci will lead again this year. She is Norwegian and one of the few who knows how to pronounce the words.

We only have a few months left to fill the 2010 calendar, so get out and start taking pictures. For the April photo contest we need photos of what is typical in Douglas County in April, which could be anything from blooming flowers to another spring snowstorm. You be the judge.

The contest is open to anyone in Douglas County of photos taken in Douglas County. There is no age limit for entering the contests and you can win more than once. But you can't win if you don't enter. Spring weather is great for taking winning pictures.

For any questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
