EDITOR:
I am a volunteer at the Douglas County Animal Shelter and a member of DAWG. I have seen first hand how stressful it is for the animals kept there even now. Adding the noise, dust and commotion of first building a moto-cross track and then of holding the events would seriously impact these animals.
Our best strategy for lowering the stress level for the dogs is being able to take them for a walk in the surrounding countryside away from the noise and commotion of the shelter. Having motocross next door would certainly decrease the effectiveness of this. We are very committed to supporting and rehabilitating these unfortunate animals and I would sincerely appreciate your support as well.
As a member of the Douglas County Sheriff's Mounted Posse my other concern is the closeness to the fairgrounds.
This facility's primary use is equine and agricultural events.
As a general rule live animals and motorcycles don't mix well. Add in the children who will be present, practicing or competing at both venues and I believe safety will be seriously compromised.
Please deny this use in this location. There must be a more suitable location in this county away from both populated areas and the only two public facilities that we have for use by live animals.
