Tennis: Local athletes compete in satellite opener

The first tournament of the 2009 Northern Nevada Junior Satellite Series was hosted by the Lakeridge Tennis Club in Reno.


James TenBroeck, 15, was seeded No. 1 in the boys 18 division and he breezed through the competition.


Amelia Ritger, 15, was also seeded No. 1 in the girls 18 division. She defeated hard-hitting Diana Kovaltchouck of Wooster in the finals 6-1, 6-3.


Matt Johnson, 13, came out on top of the boys 14 consolation bracket with a 0-6, 6-2, 6-3 win.


In the boys 12 division, Pat Johnson, 12, lost in the second round to the eventual winner. Mike Johnson, 11, lost a three-set match in the final of the boys 12 consolation.


Sam Johnson, 9, had an impressive second-round victory over Mikael Tiilikainen of Reno, winning 8-7, 7-4 and then lost in the final of the boys 10 division.


Playing in her first tournament, Madelyn Landerfelt, 10, lost to the eventual champion 8-5 in the first round, but bounced back to win her next two matches 8-1 and 8-0. She finished second in the girls 10 round robin.


The next event is at the Reno Tennis Center on May 16-17.
