Kathy Port, our April photo contest winner captured something very special about April in Douglas County. Thank you, Kathy, for your beautiful photo. And thanks also to Debi Lynn Smith of Topaz Ranch Estates for her great runner-up photo. Both photos are posted at the reception desk at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville.

Thanks to all you who entered photos for April. Your photos were great and those in charge of the Main Street Bookstore have decided to take several and make them into note cards for sale to the public. Check out the bookstore; your name may be on a photo note card for sale.

Thanks to all who attended the season opening of the Genoa Courthouse Museum last Saturday. There was quite a crowd for our Snowshoe Thompson program. We all sang the Norwegian national anthem in Norwegian and enjoyed Don Thompson's program. We learned how important Snowshoe Thompson was to Nevada history.

The Great Barns of Carson Valley Tour is May 23. Stop by the Gardnerville museum to pick up your ticket before they are all gone. Remember, this year we have the option of touring the Dangberg Home Ranch barn. This ranch wasn't available to tour until just recently, so don't miss this chance to see where our Valley history began.

Also, be sure to get your raffle tickets for the beautiful framed photo and poem by local cowboy poet Ken Gardner. Many of you will remember Ken as the sheriff in the annual melodrama. He is an accomplished cowboy poet and has donated this signed and framed photo for a raffle during the barn tour. The winner will be announced at the ice cream social after the tour.

Also ongoing is the May photo contest. Pick something that means May in Douglas County, take a photo of it and enter the contest. The deadline is 4 p.m. May 30.

Keep Saturday, June 6, open for Student-Senior Day and the Pony Express re-rider and horse at the Gardnerville Museum at 11 a.m. More on this later in May.

For questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help keep our doors open.
