Douglas High junior Thomas Wicker clinched the Sierra League boys' golf championship for the second-consecutive season on Wednesday at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course in South Lake.
Wicker posted the day's low score in the final regular season tournament " a six-over 78 " to win a division event for the fourth time in six tries. He needed a final-hole birdie to overcome Carson's Johnathon Singer, who bogeyed the 18th hole for a 79.
"I hit only a few fairways all day. The last four or five holes, I could feel good about that," said Wicker, who played most of the back nine in even par.
"I know I pretty much had it going into today unless I got DQ'd," he said.
Now Wicker can focus on the regional tournament, where he finished fourth last year.
"It's at Thunder Canyon, where it's so windy and dry," Wicker said. "I hit the ball with a low trajectory, so it sets up well for me."
Although regionals are his first big test, Wicker can't help but look ahead to the state tournament.
"I want to play well at state because I did awful there my freshman and sophomore seasons," the junior said.
Manogue won the final event with a total of 415 strokes. Fallon was second at 424 and Galena third at 444. Rounding out the scoring were Carson at 449, Douglas at 461 and South Tahoe at 471. Wooster and Damonte Ranch fielded incomplete teams.
Douglas' fifth-place team finish appears to have left the Tigers out of a team berth for the regional tournament, which begins Monday.
Eric Guzman shot an 89 for the Tigers, Aaron Allen shot a 95, Jake Tessman shot a 98, Cody Logan came in at 101 and Aaron Leising shot a 102.
