A temporary motocross track next door to the Douglas County Animal Shelter was approved by county commissioners at about 7 p.m. Thursday after they heard two hours of testimony on both sides. Opponents said it would disturb the animals housed at the shelter. Proponents say it will be a valuable source of revenue.

When the wind changes, we may start getting smoke from a 3,000-acre fire burning near Santa Barbara. As of Thursday night, smoke from the fire was being blown due south out to sea. But as the weather stabilizes, the plume may turn northward, possibly coming over the Sierra. The Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch has received a request for help to respond to the fire.

A controlled burn in Markleeville sent up a plume of smoke at about 5 p.m. Thursday that was reported as a forest fire. Fire units from Douglas and Alpine counties investigated and found that a controlled burn being conducted by federal firefighters was still pumping out smoke.

It's going to be sunny and clear for the first weekend in a while. Today's high will easily crack 70. By Sunday it's supposed to hit 80 degrees. If the forecast holds, it will cool off slightly early next week.
