Those interested in learning how wine grapes grow in Nevada have an opportunity to find out at an extreme grape growing workshop, called The Grapes of Wrath, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 30.
The workshop will be taught by industry experts from the Tahoe Ridge Vineyards & Winery and the Nevada Wine & Grape Growers Association.
Participants will learn how to grow interspecific wine grapes in Northern Nevada's harsh climate. They'll learn which soils are right to support grape vines, and how drip irrigation systems can conserve water in the arid climate.
Experts will discuss why certain wine grape varietals, such as Marquette, grow in Northern Nevada, and why pinot noir should not be grown. Participants will also learn about trellis types and the various advantages they offer to supporting grape crops, plus the business and economics of growing grapes on a commercial scale.
The day will conclude with a Nevada interspecific wine barrel tasting and a social hour to talk and meet other Nevada grape growers. Each class participant will receive an interspecific grape vine upon completing the class for the day.
Cost is $25 per person and includes lunch and the wine tasting. Space is limited to the first 25 people. To sign up, call (800) 783-1566.
