May 17, 1929

O.E. Lofthes, who worked on the Arnold Settelmeyer ranch and who was placed in jail by local officers because of his refusal to work, was returned yesterday to the Nevada State hospital for the insane, he having escaped from that institution shortly before coming to this section.

May 14, 1959

Vice President and Mrs. Richard M. Nixon will attend the Nevada Silver Centennial Celebration at Virginia City on June 12. Mrs. Nixon, herself a native Nevadan, will share an equally prominent role in the official opening ceremonies. Nixon's visit to the Comstock, marking the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the Comstock Lode, will make him the highest ranking governmental figure to visit the famed mining metropolis since an inspection trip by Gen. Ulysses Grant during the heyday of the Comstock city.

May 10, 1984

Douglas School Board members showed a commitment to the future when they voted to purchase $25,000 worth of hard and soft computer ware, but exactly how the equipment will be used in county schools remains to be seen. The $25,000 was slated for language arts textbooks.

Proponents of a computer lab idea argued that placing a computer in every classroom is not the best use of the computer. When it's not being used at all, it is just sitting in a class. When in a lab, it could be used by different groups continuously. If the classroom teacher is not computer-oriented, the computer is not being used to its fullest potential.
