William Elery Channing writes, "Difficulties are meant to rouse, not discourage. The human spirit is to grow strong by conflict."
During the last five months, our family, friends, and this community have come face to face with an extreme difficulty and while not discouraged, admittedly roused to complete attention. When the events of Nov. 22 were focused upon us, you took it upon yourselves to shelter us and tackle this challenge when we were sure we couldn't. The human spirit and selfless compassion of this community has never been more evident or apparent than it has since then.
That fall Saturday started out like many before, a trip up to a mountain full of tall trees to get a trailer full of wood. But that fall Saturday ended like none other before. A very critically injured 10-year-old boy with a devastating brain injury was the day's final outcome. While the shock halted us all, you wasted no time in turning shock into belief and unwavering support which grew with each passing day. We understood early on that no matter what you, Carson Valley, had willingly placed yourselves on the front lines and picked us up, prepared to carry us on an unknown journey that would lie ahead. You picked us up then and are still carrying us now. We remember all too well the many bumps and bends we've already passed and we know all too well that there are many more waiting for us. But you have proven that the spirit of this community, while tested, is a resilient and unbreakable one, and you, Carson Valley, will forever stand taller than any tree up in those beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains that surround us. May God bless all of you and know that we will forever be grateful to this community full of believers. As a small token of gratitude, we want to invite you all to Joey Jacobsen's Thank-You Barbecue and Tree Burning Party on May 23 from 4-8 pm at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. The tree has been cut and Joey will finally get the opportunity to burn it up. Please join us so we can finally tell you all what we've wanted to for so long ... Thanks for believing.
