After holding on for a close win over Galena Friday afternoon in the Northern 4A Regional Tournament, the Douglas softball team saw its season come to an end in a 10-2 loss to top-ranked Reed.
Douglas opened the day in the winners bracket and kept things close with defending state champion Spanish Springs through the first half of the game, trailing only 1-0.
The Cougars broke things open late, however, and sent Douglas to the loser's bracket with a 6-0 loss.
Douglas needed a late run to get past Galena after leading 8-4 at one point. Stephanie Harper, who pitched the majority of all three games Friday, was pulled in order to rest her arm for Reed, but Galena responded with a grand slam home run to tie the game up at eight entering the seventh inning.
Brenna White singled to bring Mackenzie Cauley home and give Douglas the 9-8 win.
Reed, the High Desert League champions, brought three runs across in the top half of the first inning but Harper proceeded to shut the Raiders out over the next four frames as Douglas cut the lead to 3-2.
Mia Townsell singled to lead off the bottom of the second and was sacrificed to second by Cauley. Townsell moved to third on wild pitch and Rebecca Trute brought her home with a single to right.
Douglas got its final run of the afternoon in the bottom of the fourth when Trute hit a one-out single up the middle and shortstop Emily Weaver hit a two-out double to score Trute.
Reed broke things open with a three-run sixth and a four-run seventh to advance to the loser's bracket finals on Saturday.
