October photo contest winner announced

Congratulations to Merry Muller, the winner of the Douglas County Historical Society's October photo contest. What a great representation of October in Douglas County. Thank you to all who entered. Please enter again because now the November Photo Contest is open. You could be our next winner.

Saturday is the November Student-Senior Day. As usual, admission is free for seniors 65 and over and for all students accompanied by an adult. We hope you will take these free admission opportunities to visit your museum and learn a bit about the history of our valley.

Michael Makley will be speaking about John Mackay and his influence on northern Nevada at the historical society's monthly lecture, 7 p.m. Thursday at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center. Admission is free for DCHS members and only $3 for non-members. Come learn about this very influential person in Nevada history.

December's Student-Senior Day on Dec. 5 is also the day of our annual Holiday Gala. We will be spread throughout the Gardnerville museum with all kinds of events. Visitors will be able to see all the gingerbread houses entered into our annual contest and all the decorated Christmas trees entered into our 13th annual Gala of Trees.

As a visitor, you will be able to vote for your favorites in both categories. For the gingerbread houses, you will be voting for Best of Show. For the Christmas trees, your votes will be made by casting quarters (or more) into the ballot box by each tree. You can vote for any tree you like, as many trees as you like or one tree over and over again. But do come in and vote.

Santa will be on the front porch to pose for photos with kids, grandkids or whomever you bring. We'll develop and print the photo while you wait, or better yet, while you tour the trees and gingerbread houses. Your photos may be collected in the main lobby. They will be mounted for Christmas giving and you can order more than one copy. Copies are $5 each.

Don't forget the cookie walk. With all we have going on, don't take the time to bake. Stop by the cookie walk and buy all the cookies you'll need for the holiday season without messing up one single pan. But come early for the best choices.
