Football: Coleville rumbles past Carlin in first round of playoffs

The Coleville Wolves won their 1st Round Playoff Game in convincing fashion crushing the visiting Carlin Railroaders by a final score of 72-18.

Carlin put a first quarter scare into Coleville by shutting down the Wolves on their first two series and taking an early 8-0 lead. Carlin threatened to score a second touchdown early in the first quarter after they recovered a fumble on Coleville's 15-yard line. Coleville's defense turned the momentum around when linebacker/quarterback Jason Peters forced a fumble that was recovered by Mat Randall on Coleville's 1-yard line.

Two plays later, Coleville's offense came up with the biggest play of the game when Jason Peters hit tightend Jay Clark on a 79-touchdown pass. "Carlin had us on the ropes early. The defense saved us and that big touchdown pass really changed the momentum," commented Coach Sandy.

Coleville went on to score 72 unanswered points, led by Jason Peters who threw for 316 yards with 5 touchdown passes and rushed for 122 yards including 2 touchdown runs.

Tightend Jay Clark led the Coleville receivers with 102 receiving yards including 2 touchdown receptions. Emmi Sandoval, Shane Parker, and John "Buh" Hamilton also had touchdown receptions.

Shane Parker filling in for Hamilton who was forced out of the game in the second quarter ended the day with 86 yards rushing and scored on a 15-yard run. "Shane really gave us a big lift. After missing most of the season with an ankle injury, it was nice to see Shane healthy again," stated Coach Sandy.

Coleville's defense rebounded from a shaky start to hold Carlin's powerful rushing game to only 115-yards. The Wolves forced 7 turnovers with Emmi Sandoval and Cody Clark each intercepting Carlin twice.

Linebackers Jay Clark with 3 solos, 10 assists, and 1 interception and Tyler Summers with 2 solos and 13 assists led the Wolves. Defensive ends Mat Randall with 3 solos, 6 assists, and 2 sacks and Steven Koelling with 1 solo, 5 assists, and 1 sack also played extremely well defensively.

Coleville will host Tonopah on Saturday afternoon in a State "A" semifinal game with kickoff at 1 p.m. The winner will advance to the state finals to be held the following Saturday in Reno.
