The Salvation Army Carson City Corps, Mike's Pharmacy and KOH News Talk Radio will holding its annual Turkey Roundup at 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 18, at Mike's Pharmacy off East William and Curry streets.

The Salvation Army will be collecting turkeys from the public on behalf of the Carson City community. The turkeys will be distributed to community organizations in Carson City, Douglas County and South Lake Tahoe the following day. Turkeys and cash/credit donations are accepted. Donors can receive a receipt for tax purposes from the Salvation Army.

This event has been in the Carson City community for about 10 years. The Salvation Army estimates needs will be high this Thanksgiving and Christmas season due to this current economy.

"The thing I love most about this community is its deep spirit of generosity. When we see our neighbors hurting, even when we're hurting, we still do what we can to reach out and give a hand up. That is what I love," said Capt. Erica Helton.

The Red Kettle Campaign kicks off Nov. 15.

"We couldn't have done Turkey Roundup without the help and driving force of Mike's Pharmacy," said Lt. Heather Paap.

The Carson City Corps starts planning for Thanksgiving and Christmas as early as August and continues with the spirit of volunteering and giving until after the New Year.

The Salvation Army is an international religious and charitable movement founded in 1865. The motivation of the organization is love of God and a practical concern for the needs of humanity.
