The November photo contest is now in full swing. Each monthly contest leads to a winning photo which will be featured on our next calendar. This month's winner will be the photo for November 2011. So, enter. Your photo could be the featured photo for our next calendar.
Contest rules are simple. You must live in Douglas County and your photo must be of something in Douglas County. Our judges are looking for photos that really say, "That's Douglas County this month," so be sure your photo is of something that represents our county in November. For instance, everyone everywhere has turkey, but only here can we have turkey in front of the CVIC Hall on Esmeralda Avenue. Enter by 4 p.m. Nov. 30.
The deadline is 4 p.m. today to enter the 13th annual Gallery of Trees. Call 782-2555 or go to the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville to enter your tree into our annual contest. You can enter as an individual, a group, a business or any way you wish, but you have to do it today.
The display of the trees opens on Saturday, Dec. 5. Vote for your favorites Dec. 5-31 by dropping quarters (or more) into the canister by each tree. The winner will be featured in this column in January.
You can also enter the gingerbread house decorating contest. Applications are available at the Gardnerville museum, the Douglas County Public Library in Minden and the parks and recreation office across from Lampe Park. Applications are also available at www.cvartscouncil.com and www.historicnevada.org. Your entry does not have to be a house; it can be a castle, a barn or whatever you choose.
The actual exhibit of gingerbread houses will be at the Gardnerville museum from Dec. 5-19. Again, the public will be encouraged to vote for their favorite which will be given the Best of Show Award. There will be a special artists' reception Dec. 19 where all the winners will be announced. For further information, please call 782-2555 or Dennis Little at 267-5634.
For questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
