Douglas H1N1 swine flu cases at 172

There have been 172 cases of confirmed or probable cases of H1N1 swine flu in Douglas County since the contagion first arrived in the county over the summer.

The Nevada State Health Division said no one from Douglas has died of the flu, according to numbers released on Friday.

Douglas has had far fewer than the 370 confirmed and probable cases in Carson City. The state reports having 2,398 confirmed cases and 28 deaths from the flu.

So far, 1,138 doses of the H1N1 vaccine have been distributed in Douglas County, 420 doses Nov. 1-7.

For the first time since the vaccine became available, the number of doses received by the state has exceeded the expected allotment.

Douglas County school children will be vaccinated next week, according to the state.

Information went home with students two weeks ago. The district is requiring parents fill out permission slips and the screening questionnaire before allowing students to be vaccinated.

Nurses will be at Meneley, Scarselli and Gardnerville elementary schools on Monday; Jacks Valley, Minden, Pinon Hills and Zephyr Cove elementary schools on Wednesday.

Children younger than 9 will require a second dose of the vaccine in four weeks. Nurses will be back to administer that dose.

A vaccination clinic will be offered at a later date for secondary students, according to the district's Web site.
