Scarselli student earns a buck

Scarselli student Mitchell Menzer got his first buck on Oct. 16 while hunting with his mom and grandparents out near Pioche.

Mitchell is 12 and this was the first year he could hunt. He used the shotgun he received on his birthday to bag the deer.

Kathy Mortimer brought his photo by with his catch. He is the son of Cristy Menzer of Gardnerville.

Sgt. James Whorley returned home to Gardnerville on Nov. 2 after spending four years in the U.S. Army, including two tours in Iraq.

He will be home for the holidays with friends and family before leaving after the New Year for Virginia, where he will be attending Virginia Tech.

He is the son of the Rev. and Mrs. George Whorley of Gardnerville.

James is a 2004 graduate of Douglas High School.

Douglas High School graduate Staff Sgt. Derek Castro was presented with his Purple Heart by Gov. Jim Gibbons during an award ceremony on Monday.

Castro was injured when an improvised explosive device went off on Feb. 12 in Afghanistan.

Derek graduated from Douglas in 1997. He now lives in Carson City.
