While it has been 11 years since Douglas High School has fielded a state championship team, Saturday's victory by the Lady Tiger soccer team was particularly sweet.
For a variety of reasons, Nevada has never had a statewide tournament for girls soccer until this year.
Thanks to their defeat of Galena, they will be listed forever as the inaugural statewide girls soccer champions.
Look at the stats and it's clear to see this Tiger squad was a special one.
The Lady Tigers posted a school record 22 wins for the year. They won the first girls' soccer regional title since 2002. They also sealed the school's first team state title since Douglas volleyball players won in 1998.
Several of Douglas High's teams made playoffs this year, and hopefully those students who are returning next year will take these experiences and build on them.
We are particularly proud of the Valley's soccer girls, and toast them for their victory.
May their future be as bright as these past few weeks as they go on to other victories, both as a team and as individuals.
