The winner of the Douglas County Historical Society's November photo contest will be chosen at the end of the month. Last month we had so many entries that judging was really difficult.
The annual Holiday Gala on Saturday, Dec. 5, is the day when we open up the Gardnerville museum and throw a huge party.
Start early with the cookie walk and buy as many cookies as you want without having to heat up the oven. Come early for the best selections. We sell you a container and you choose the cookies you want.
Be sure to bring the kids, the grandkids or anyone else you want in the photo with Santa, who will be on the front porch of the museum with his photo elves for pictures with your family. We'll take the photo, print it and put it into a card suitable for Christmas giving. The processing takes a few minutes.
While you are waiting, why not tour the museum? There will be gingerbread houses to see and vote for your favorite. There will be decorated Christmas trees located all over the museum for you to also vote on for your favorites.
Photos with Santa are $5 each for different poses or several copies of the same pose. Cookies are charged by the size of the container you purchase. The rest of the events are free.
There is no charge to vote for your choice of gingerbread house. You do vote for the trees of your choice by putting quarters (or more) into the voting tins near each tree. How much you choose to spend is up to you. If you really like one particular tree, you can put in as much money as you want. The tree that wins is the one with the most money, so put in what you think it will take to win.
The day starts at 10 a.m. with Santa appearing around 10:30 a.m. The cookie walk goes until they run out of cookies and Santa stays until about 3 p.m.
For questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
