DHS Speech and Debate wins big at McQueen

The Douglas High Speech and Debate Team traveled to McQueen High School Nov. 20-21 and continued to win big in the top events of the tournament.

Three of the team's seniors continued to assert their dominance in Northern Nevada speech and debate; including Will Dornbrook and Evan Kleiner coming in first in policy debate and Kevin Kendrick winning first in Lincoln Douglas debate leaving him with first place in all three tournaments this year.

Dornbrook and Kleiner have placed first in both tournaments this year they have attended. Seventeen schools from all over Northern Nevada competed in five speech events and three debate events.

The following students from Douglas High School received awards for Nov. 21's debate events: Will Dornbrook and Evan Kleiner won first place in senior policy; Kevin Kendrick took first place in senior Lincoln Douglas debate, as well as best speaker for Lincoln Douglas; Megan Frost earned third place in senior Lincoln Douglas; Noah O'Conner and Kaitlyn Barger took second place in senior public forum; Sedona Schat and Abby Chittwood won third place in senior public forum.

Additionally, the following students from Douglas High School received awards for their speaking events on Nov. 20: Molly Ellery won second place in senior impromptu; Kevin Kendrick took third place in senior humorous interpretation; Nicole Romaneschi received third place in senior original oratory; Evan Kleiner received fourth place in senior foreign extemporaneous; Noah O'Conner received sixth place in senior foreign extemporaneous; Roy Dornbrook earned fifth place in novice foreign extemporaneous.

The freshmen competitors from Carson Valley Middle School also continued to perform well. One of the largest events of the night left the two competitors in the final round of novice policy both from Carson Valley Middle School. This was the second tournament in a row where these four students closed out. They will now be eligible to compete in senior division. The following are the awards won by CVMS students: Mac Cronin and Joel Kaufmann in addition to the team of Bailey Gumm and Emily Hales closed out the final round of novice policy taking home first and second place; Joel Kaufmann won best speaker for novice policy; Abigail Lewis won third place in novice Lincoln Douglas; Mac Cronin earned third place in novice foreign extemporaneous; Evan Stokes won second place in novice Impromptu; Emily Hales won first place in novice original oratory; Taylor Hubbard won fifth place in novice original oratory.
