RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada women's basketball team fell to West Virginia 66-41 Saturday night in the final of the Pack's Nugget Classic.
With the loss, Nevada fell to 4-2 on the year while West Virginia improved to 5-1.
The Pack played the Mountaineers close in the first half as neither team led by more than eight until West Virginia went up by eight, 17-9, with 9:35 left in the half. From that point the Mountaineers went on a 25-10 run to end the half as West Virginia took a 35-19 lead at the half.
In the second half, the Pack used a 9-4 run capped by a layup from Nicole Williams to pull to within 13, 41-28. West Virginia extended its lead to 26 twice late in the game and posted the 66-41 win to capture the Nugget Classic title.
Sophomore point guard Amanda Johnson led Nevada with a career-high 11 points while Johnna Ward and Nicole Williams each added eight points. Shavon Moore led Nevada with eight rebounds.
For the game, the Pack shot 31.4 percent (16-of-51) from the floor while the Mountaineers shot 38.7 percent (24-of-62). West Virginia outrebounded Nevada 66-41 in the game.
Nevada's next game is on Wednesday at noon against Sacramento State at Lawlor Events Center.
