The Rotary Clubs of District 5190, Area 9 host their fourth annual Rotary International Foundation dinner 5:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Carson Valley Inn in Minden. The Rotary Area 9 Clubs are Carson City, Carson City Sunset, Minden, South Lake Tahoe, and Tahoe-Douglas.
The purpose of the dinner is to recognize and celebrate the achievements of the Rotary International Foundation, whose mission is to support the RI goal of promoting national and international peace and understanding. Rotary Foundation programs include:
Polio Eradication. In 1985, RI initiated a partnership with the 166 nations of the World Health Assembly with a resolution to eradicate polio. At that time polio virus was circulating in 125 countries. In 2006, only four countries had new polio cases.
Ambassadorial Scholars. Each year the foundation sponsors 1,000 students with scholarships of $26,000 for professional studies worldwide.
Group Study Exchange. The foundation sponsors groups of young professionals to visit foreign nations to share professional perspectives.
Grants. Each year, the foundation provides grants to assist local clubs who have identified and joined with other Rotary Clubs on international projects.
The evening's keynote speaker is 2001-02 World President of Rotary International Richard D. King. He is senior partner in the California law firm King, King, and King, and is admitted to practice in both Utah and California and before the Supreme Court of the United States. He earned undergraduate and law degrees from the University of California at Berkeley, and taught law at Brigham Young University.
King has served as a trustee of The Rotary Foundation, director and as chairman of the executive committee of Rotary International's Board of Directors. He has received the Rotary Citation for Meritorious Service and the Distinguished Service Award for his support of humanitarian and educational programs of The Rotary Foundation.
One of Rotary's most popular speakers, King has addressed Rotary International conventions, Assemblies, Institutes, Seminars, Conferences, and Rotary Clubs in every state in the U.S. and some 100 countries. As President, he led Rotary International to its greatest one-year growth record in its then 97 year history, with 75,000 new members net, and 1,158 new Rotary Clubs. In that same year, a new record was set in Rotarian contributions to the Annual Fund of The Rotary Foundation.
