County commissioners voted 4-1 on Oct. 1 to abandon 20 feet of Carson Street right of way in front of the Ron Funk residence at 179 Carson St. in Genoa.
Funk had requested a 25-foot abandonment, but commissioners agreed to 20 feet. Commissioner Doug Johnson voted against the request.
Trimming the request to 20 feet leaves in place an option for Funk's neighbor David Cochran to ask for a 5-foot abandonment to protect a 100-year-old rock wall in front of his house.
Johnson said he objected because of the neighborhood opposition to the abandonment and he felt there would be material damage to an historic road.
Commissioner Greg Lynn recommended the abandonment be reduced to 20 feet "to preserve the historic character" of the road, and include the requirement that the Funks will provide "any and all necessary easements."
The Funks are relocating to Southern California and requested the abandonment to bring the property into conformity and facilitate the sale of their house.
