Football: Kaepernick named WAC player of the week

DENVER - Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick, Fresno State cornerback Desia Dunn and New Mexico State punt returner Marcus Anderson were named the Western Athletic Conference offensive, defensive and special teams players of the week, respectively.

Kaepernick, a junior from Turlock, Calif. (Pittman HS), accounted for all five touchdowns and 255 yards of total offense in Nevada's 37-14 win over Louisiana Tech. Kaepernick was 15-of-21 for 166 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. He also rushed 12 times for 89 yards and scored two touchdowns including one on a 67-yard run late in the third quarter.

Dunn, a junior from Stockton, Calif. (Edison HS), had a career-high 10 tackles, including nine solo, in Fresno State's 42-17 win at Hawai'i. He also forced a fumble and broke up two passes in the victory. The Bulldog defense held the Warriors to 283 passing yards, the lowest output by Hawai'i this year.

Anderson, a senior from Austin,Texas (Pasadena CC), returned four punts for 91 yards in New Mexico State's 20-17 win over Utah State. His biggest return came late in the fourth quarter with the teams tied at 17. Anderson fielded a punt at the New Mexico State 15-yard line and returned it 56 yards to help set up the game winning field goal as time expired.

Others nominated on offense: junior running back Ryan Mathews, Fresno State; senior offensive left guard Mike Iupati, Idaho; junior running back Seth Smith, New Mexico State; and sophomore running back Robert Turbin, Utah State.

Also nominated on defense: junior lineback JoJo Dickson, Idaho; junior defensive end Kevin Basped, Nevada; senior linebacker Jason Scott, New Mexico State; and sophomore linebacker Bobby Wagner, Utah State.

Other special teams nominations included: junior offensive guard Andrew Jackson, Fresno State; freshman placekicker Trey Farquhar, Idaho; freshman punter Cade Glasgow, Louisiana Tech; and sophomore linebacker Kaelin Burnett, Nevada.
