Two-time defending regional champion Bethany Wurster shot an 89 on the first day of the Northern 4A Regional girls' golf championships at Eagle Valley West Golf Course Monday.

The score was good enough to tie for sixth with Spanish Springs' Brittany Best.

Manogue's Alex Phillips led the tournament after the first round with a 75 while her closest competition was teammate Mackenzie Sowers, who shot an 83.

Manogue also led the team tournament by a wide margin on Day 1, shooting a team score of 340 -- nearly 40 strokes better than their closest competition (Spanish Springs at 379). Elko, Carson, Reno, Damonte Ranch, Galena and McQueen rounded out the team standings in order.

The second and final round starts Tuesday at 9:45 a.m. at Eagle Valley East. A high chance of rain, coupled with strong winds was in the forecast for the day, which should make things pretty interesting.
