The Douglas junior varsity football team improved its record to 7-0 with a 35-6 victory over the Wooster Colts. The game featured scoring plays by the Douglas special teams, stout defense by the Douglas front five and some entertaining runs by players whose main job is to block.
Special teams touchdowns were scored by Nate Vonahsen on a 40-yard punt return, and Connor Hughes on a 41-yard run on a fake punt. The offense scored on a Dylan Nielson 53-yard run, a Jackson Ketron 30-yard screen pass from quarterback Sam Cochran, and a Cochran 20-yard run with a quarterback sneak.
Vonahasen was good on all five of his extra-point kicks.
The best drive of the second half was highlighted by the ball carrying abilities of the Tiger linemen. All made positive yards, with the best probably being a 12-yard burst off left tackle by Jeremiah Crawford. Though the drive didn't result in a touchdown, it consumed a lot of the clock, and was a huge crowd pleaser.
The defense was keyed early on by front three Nick Fickle, Jordan Pruitt, and Tim Phenix. Ends Trevor Shaffer and Ketron kept the Wooster quarterback under wraps, with Ketron registering four sacks in the first half.
The lone Wooster score came on a 60-yard touchdown pass late in the first half. The Tiger back-up defense held the Colts scoreless the entire second half.
The Douglas Tigers junior varsity girls' soccer team took on the Fallon Greenwave last Saturday in Fallon.
Marissa Cowan scored one goal, Aspen Abbott scored two goals, Kaelin Mejia scored two goals, Cara Dunkelman scored two goals and Jillian Olivera scored one goal. The Tigers came away with an 8-0 win.
Douglas also beat Galena 3-0 on Wednesday.
Cowan started the game off right by knocking one in the Grizzly net within the first minute of the game after receiving a pass from Halle Niehoff.
For the remainder of the first half, the midfield held the ball in contol with Kaitlyn Varble, Kaelin Mejia, Courtney Grahl-Lawrence, Niehoff and Dunkelman playing keep-away. Kelsie Martinez, Abbott and Tory Peiters kept the Grizzly goalie on her toes with multiple shots.
The second half felt much like the first until Dunkelman shot one in with a pass from Mejia in the fifteenth minute of play.
Ericka Munoz handled about 10 shots on goal for the entire game and can credit her inpenetrable defense for that feat.
Olivera, Kelly Tompkins and Allison Chambon controlled the middle while feeding the ball outside to their speedy fullbacks, Lacey Marsh and Kelsie Mehrer.
Late in the game Dunkelman drew a foul and took the direct kick outside the box. She knocked it in just over the goalie's fingers.
