CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Nevada officials have opted not to erect signs letting motorists know which highway projects are being paid for by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Despite what authorities call "strong encouragement" from the Obama administration, Nevada Transportation Department Director Susan Martinovich decided not to spend money on the signs.

Department spokesman Scott Magruder says the signs cost about $1,200 each, and the decision not to put them up was purely due to cost.

Conservatives have complained about the cost, and say the signs amount to a political ad for a key Democratic program.

The signs show the silhouette of a worker digging and the words "putting America to work."

Among several other states that have decided to not use the signs are Georgia, Florida, New York and Texas.
