RENO - The Douglas boys' soccer team picked up a valuable point as they push toward claiming the final playoff spot in the Sierra League, tying league-leading Bishop Manogue 0-0 on Saturday.
"It was a really good game for us," Douglas coach Milko Vasquez said. "It put us into fourth place in the league for now. We still have an outside chance for third, but we have three very tough games to close out the season."
The Tigers are 5-4-2 with 17 points. They finish with South Tahoe on Wednesday, Carson on Saturday and Fallon next Tuesday. The Tigers and Fallon are battling for the last playoff spot.
Douglas had four shots on goals and Manogue had six.
"We were pretty scrappy today," Vasquez said. "We persevered in many aspects."
Vasquez gave credit to the midfield unit made up of Luke Prinz, Edgar Arceo, Corbin Zumpft, Cole Cline and Edgar Gonzalez for controlling the game and to fullbacks Brian Randall and Troy Cohee on the defensive end.
"We also got a lot of quality work up top from Audrick Anderson," Vasquez said. "That really helped us in this game.
"It was crucial for us to get that point in the standings. From here on we just have to go out and take care of business."
Ivan Gonzalez stopped five shots in goal to record the shutout.
The junior varsity squad put up a 4-0 win for Douglas Saturday as well.
