It may be two weeks before the Mono County Jail in Bridgeport is fit for prisoners after flooding rendered it uninhabitable last week.

Undersheriff Ralph Obenberger reported that as of Friday the jail was still not operational after flooding from Tuesday's heavy rain storm forced the evacuation of 22 inmates.

"The rehabilitation of the facility is ongoing and moving forward," he said. "Although it is expected to take a minimum of two to three weeks to possibly house inmates once again in Bridgeport."

Because Inyo County, located south of Mono County, is taking the majority of their prisoners, its jail is also near to capacity.

Mono is now moving inmates to the El Dorado Jail located in South Lake Tahoe.

Obenberger said that new arrests will be booked in Inyo County, but will be moved to El Dorado County Jail after that.

Anyone with questions regarding the inmates may call the Mono County Jail at (760) 932-7549.
