One of my favorite restaurants, Hamdog's, is having a problem. Of course, who isn't, unless you're one of the national or international companies?
The owner, Greg Sayabalian, has come up with a plan to resolve the problem, which includes a zone change from general commercial to tourist commercial with a gaming overlay in order to accommodate smokers.
An expansion of current facilities would increase gaming. However, the Douglas County Board of Commissioners has denied the zone change application for some reason, which can only mean action in favor of big business and a bias against local firms.
The Town of Gardnerville is in favor, as well as the planning commission. My feeling is that the county should give a local business a chance to succeed or fail, and if it fails, it's Greg's problem. He is even thinking of moving to a friendlier county, which means I may have to make quite a trip for a favorite meal.
