Mac-the-Naw: Daylight savings time approaches

Hello fellow anglers; Sad news, it is getting closer to that special day. That is October 31st when we turn our clocks back. Which gives us less one less hour of the day to fish. But there is always a bright side, Ice fishing is getting closer to us.

On a different note. Many Nevada anglers will be happy soon. For the last 2 years in the Nevada fishing regulations, there has been a local place to fish that no one can find. Reason; it has not been built yet. I am speaking of the Fugi park pond located in Carson City next to Bodines Casino. Ground was broken a couple weeks ago and the pond is taking shape. By spring it should be ready to fish for rainbow trout. A place to go for a lunch hour to just wet a fly, or an afternoon picnic with the family. My Naw hat is off to the NDOW and all involved.

Now with our ever changing weather, lets check out our local waters.

LAKE TAHOE; Mackinaw action is rated good to excellent when the winds are calm. Average fish has been 1 to 4 pounds with an occasional 5 to 7 pounder. Best areas have been Sugar Pine point and the Cal/Neva area. starting in 60 feet early in the AM, going out to 220 feet as the morning progresses. The Cave Rock launch area has been fair for rainbow and Mackinaw trout from the shore. Worms or Kastmaster lures have been the most productive. Special note; The Cave Rock launch is open from 6 AM to 4PM, Don't get caught out on the lake. For more information call Blue Ribbon Charters at 53-544-6552.

CAPLES LAKE; The lake has come up with our recent rains,. The boat launch at the Caples lake resort is still open for use. Great reports coming out of Caples last week. Don Brockage from Gardnerville caught a nice stringer of browns and rainbows trolling,Brian and son Aiden Sellers 6 pound rainbow from shore, Ken Richardson from Benica Ca a 9 pound rainbow on a rapala. With the cooling temperatures, the fishing is picking up all over. For more information call the Caples lake Resort a t209-258-8888.

RED LAKE; The brook trout have been on a real good bite. Anglers using small gold Kastmasters or Thunderbolt spoons have had great success. Average fish is 12 to 15 inches.

BLUE LAKES; As of October 20 the road is still open. Have had a couple

reports of limits of small rainbows trout. Night crawlers have been most productive. Or small spinners at the lower lake by the dam.

CARSON RIVERS; The water has come up and the fish are getting real active in the larger pools. On the west fork one angler caught and released to rainbows with each weighing in about 8 pounds. The angler who wish to remain anonymous told me he used a white lure..We have only a few weeks to take advantage of river fish until they close til next year. Although the East Carson from hangmans bridge down stream to the state line will remain open. Remember the regulations, artificial lures or flys only with single barbless hooks. And Zero limit. For more information call the Carson River Resort at 877-694-2229.

INDIAN CREEK RES; Last few weeks fishing has been on fire. Anglers are catching small rainbows, as well as rainbows in the 3 to 6 pound class. I fished with Steve Lightfoot last week and between us, we released over 15 fish. I did not see a preference in fly fishing ,lures or bait fishing. It was down right great fishing. We also caught a couple nice brown trout up to 1.5 pounds. Kayla Gunderson from Minden Nv caught a nice 2.5 pound rainbow trout, using night crawlers. One thing I have to add is. I must present the No-bell fishing prize to Mr Lightfoot. This was the first time I have seen him fish with out using those darn bells on the end of his rod. Special thank you to the South Lake Tahoe Public Utility District. The Spece cone oxygenation system works wonderful. The lake still has a little algea, But not even close to way the lake was before.

UPPER TRUCKEE RIVER,TROUT CREEK, TAYLOR CREEK; All on the south end of Lake Tahoe are closed to all fishing until July 1 2010.

TOPAZ LAKE; Closed to fishing until January 1 2010.
