EDITOR:
The answer to this whole Walmart problem can be found in the Oct. 1 edition of The Record-Courier.
Rori Coushman, who lives near Topaz Lake, wrote in a letter to the editor (I vote for Walmart) that he had asked his neighbors if they wanted to have a Walmart built in Gardnerville, and they all said yes.
I would suggest that Rori circulate a petition amongst his neighbors, asking Walmart and the Douglas County commissioners to locate the new Super Walmart right there in the Topaz Lake area and present it to them at the next meeting on Nov. 5.
Just imagine how handy it would be to have that big Walmart store right close to the people who really want it.
Think of all the great bargains that the people of Topaz, Yerington, Smith Valley, Walker, and other communities south of Gardnerville could get from having their very own Walmart.
Maybe they would even put in some gas pumps, not that they would be buying much of that, having a Walmart located so close to them.
Now I would never presume to inflict a Walmart on any person, but if some other community wants one in their midst, well I say let them have it.
I might scratch my head and wonder about it, but I'd never tell them that they should not have one, if they really want one.
This would be a win-win situation for everyone involved. The people of Gardnerville and Minden would not get a Walmart that they do not want. Rori and his neighbors would get a store right next door to them that they do want.
Walmart Corp. could put their store on cheaper land than they could buy in Gardnerville, and they could make it a big old ugly box and not have to waste a bunch of money on trying to dress it up to get it past the county officials (Think big profits and bonuses for the CEO).
The people on the Gardnerville Town Board and the Douglas County commissioners will have a much easier time not having to deal with a bunch of disgruntled citizens who hate the idea of having a Walmart built near them, and instead will have a group of happy shoppers, anxious to have that store, right there in Topaz.
Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart once said that they would never put a store where it was not wanted. Unfortunately Sam Walton died in 1992. Walmart also used to pride itself in buying from American suppliers, but like I said, Sam Walton is dead.
Well that about sums it up. A perfect solution to a big ... But wait, I just thought of something. Maybe, if the store was going to be built right next door to them, Rori and his neighbors would really not vote for Walmart. Nah, Rori is not that kind of a guy, is he?
