Our country is at a fork in the road. I am not talking about just health care reform or the economy. I am talking about a government that has become detached from the people, and so taken with its own sense of importance, that it is out of control. Over the last several decades government has grown to a size never contemplated by our founding fathers. It has injected itself into our personal lives and the private sector in ways that strain the Constitution to its breaking point.
I understand that a Walmart would do harm to our local interests like Raley's and other stores except the eating places and casinos.
In recent discussions of a new local Walmart, the major issue is what impact it will have on our community. People believe that the store will benefit our community with its attractive low prices and new jobs. On the other hand, it is argued that the store will damage the rural feel of this Valley and put out small businesses. This issue has troubled the community and dominated the recent letters to the editor.
During the last few weeks I have received the following questions from Douglas County seniors concerning the new FEMA floodplain maps.

The cartoon about the "GOP strategy room" in the Sept. 30 Nevada Appeal says it all. Killbuck, the cartoonist, is a typical tolerant liberal that is tolerant of the liberal view only. Next time you hear the Republican Party is the party of "No" remember the definition originated with a tolerant liberal. Next time you hear that Republicans have no plan it's because the tolerant liberals are not listening, that is, unless you agree with them.

Since when has Walmart become a dirty word? The current name calling and uproar over the proposed Walmart store is nothing new, nor is it valid because a small minority of vocal dissidents took to the streets to demonstrate against said store location. It seems to me that there are a few disgruntled people who are prejudiced against the free market, and have taken it upon themselves to mind everyone else's business.

Many of the businesses that are gone have left a gap in the goods and services in our valley. There is nothing to be done about what is gone, but what of those that are still holding on? We have a number of unique stores and businesses in our towns.

When we speak of a biblically balanced life, we are referring to a life reflecting the rule and submission to the whole counsel of the God's word. Not a life patterned after a few choice Scriptures that are often twisted to fit our current lifestyle. When we pick and choose which Scriptures we like or believe, we instantly neutralize the authority of the Bible and its power to lead and direct our lives. Regardless of your position on health-care reform, it's time we stand up against the dangerous hate-filled mobs that are trying to drown out a real debate on the issue. The ugly, hateful names and death threats to President Obama have no place in this debate.
