Four people were taken to the hospital Monday afternoon when the driver of a Plymouth PT Cruiser allegedly made a U-turn in front of a Dodge Neon on Highway 50 near Cave Rock.
About 3:45 p.m., the driver of the Cruiser was allegedly stopped on the right hand shoulder of the westbound lanes of the highway about a mile east of the tunnel at Cave Rock, said Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman Chuck Allen.
The driver of the silver PT Cruiser then made a U-turn that brought the Cruiser into the path of a westbound purple Dodge Neon, Allen said.
The force of the collision sent both cars crashing into the eastbound lane, Allen said.
Both occupants of the PT Cruiser were airlifted to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Allen said. The man driving the PT Cruiser suffered moderate injuries. The female passenger suffered serious injures, Allen said.
A female passenger in the Neon was also airlifted to Reno with moderate injuries. The man driving the Neon was taken to Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe with minor to moderate injuries, Allen said.
Both lanes of traffic were closed for about an hour Monday while the helicopters used to transport patients landed and crews removed debris from the highway, Allen said.
