Capital District Sen. Mark Amodei, R-Carson, is expected to announce Wednesday he is joining the race to unseat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.
Amodei, who is prevented from seeking another term in the state Senate, is to announce his candidacy at the Airport Plaza Hotel, 1981 Terminal Way in Reno at 3 p.m. Wednesday, after a 9:30 a.m. appearance in Las Vegas.
Amodei's state Capital District includes the western portion of Douglas County.
Amodei joins a number of other candidates seeking to unseat Reid, including some familiar names.
Sharron Angle, who came close to defeating Dean Heller in the scramble over Gov. Jim Gibbons' congressional seat in 2006 is pursuing Reid, as is Las Vegas attorney Danny Tarkanian, who ran for secretary of state in 2006.
He is the son of former University of Nevada, Las Vegas, basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian.
Wellington doctor Robin Titus has also announced her bid to unseat Reid
Reno attorney Chuck Kozak, and blogger Mark Noonan are also announced candidates for the office.
Waiting in the wings is Republican Party Chairwoman Sue Lowden, who has yet to announce, but was discussed as a potential candidate for the seat.
With Amodei's state senate seat vacant, former Carson City Mayor Ray Masayko has announced he intends to run.
Assemblyman James Settelmeyer, R-Gardnerville, told the Nevada Appeal he plans to seek the state seat as well, but has yet to formally announce his candidacy.
Amodei was elected to the Nevada Senate in 1998. He represented Carson City for one term in the Nevada Assembly.
