Thank you Douglas County. We have our first entry into the Douglas County Historical Society's 2011 calendar photo contest, which means the September photo contest is in full swing. Grab that digital camera and head out into our gorgeous autumn weather and take a photo of what September means to you. Entries are welcome up to 4 p.m. Sept. 30.

The 2010 calendar is at the printer and will be printed as soon as we see one final proof copy. Your copy will be ready in plenty of time for Christmas presents to family and friends. Calendars always make great gifts, but this one also helps support your local museums.

One of our members came up with a list of DCHS trivia questions. Test your knowledge of our local history. Answers at the end of the column.

1. What was the name of the first printed newspaper in Nevada?

2. Gardnerville began as a homestead in what year?

3. Barbers at one time were also the doctors and dentists in town. True or false?

Saturday, Sept. 12, is the last of this year's swap meets. This is your last chance to either sell what you have stowed in the garage or pick up a treasure or two. The meet runs from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. and booth space is only $10 when reserved early.

The final Thirsty Thursday Wine Walk will be Sept. 17. The theme is Hawaiian, so put on that Hawaiian shirt and come on out and enjoy hometown hospitality. The Gardnerville museum is a part of the history of Gardnerville and will be open for you to visit. Stop by, say hello and look around at the museum and the Main Street Bookstore.

After that we are officially into fall and fall things will be happening. You can look forward to cool, crisp evenings and Ghost Walks around Oct. 22-25. This will be a weekend filled with fun, historic and haunted adventures in Carson Valley.

Answers: 1. Genoa 's Territorial Enterprise. 2. 1861. 3. True.

For any questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
