Two full weeks into the fall season and the Douglas girls' tennis team has already avenged its two league losses from 2008.
Douglas topped South Tahoe 14-4 to remain unbeaten on the year Thursday, improving to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in Sierra League competition.
The Lady Tigers swept the singles' side, losing only six games in nine sets.
Junior Amelia Ritger won all three of her sets with 6-0 scores. She didn't lose a single game in 12 sets in the last week. Senior Cesarina Ceglia and freshman Kari TenBroeck also rolled through their three respective sets.
"Amelia continues to roll and Kari TenBroeck is proving to be one of the most talented players in Northern Nevada," Douglas coach Roger Rusmisel said. "Cesarina reversed two of her five league losses from last year this week beating Sam Maldonado on Tuesday and Rebecca Roberts today.
"All three girls are making strong cases for top seedings in this year's zone tournament."
The Tigers had a tougher go of it on the doubles side, but still put together five wins to account for the team's remaining points.
The duo of Jamie Lundergreen and Linsey Glass fell 6-4 in the first round to South Tahoe's No. 1 pair after nearly an hour-long set that included multiple deuces in each game. They came back to win another long set 6-4.
Sisters Sarah and Emily Weaver also had two long sets, beat Tahoe's No. 1 squad 7-5 and No. 2 squad 6-4.
Katie Sawicki team with Susie White to win one set and teamed with Kim Lowe to win another.
BOYS
Douglas suffered its third-consecutive defeat, this one coming at the hands of South Tahoe 13-5.
Sophomore James TenBroeck posted wins of 6-0, 6-0 and 6-2 and Garon Athanacio and the doubles team of Matt Williams and Matt Thomas each had one win to account for the Tigers' scoring.
"(James) dominated some good tennis players," Douglas coach Rod Smith said. "Garon's hard work in practice is paying off. He definitely has the skills to be a top player for us this year and the years to some.
"South Tahoe showed why they are still undefeated. They have good depth in singles and doubles. Our guys battled hard but came up just short in a number of matches. I am pleased with the progress of our young team up to this point. The skill level has gone up despite the fact that we've lost our last three matches."
