Firefighters stay ahead of lightning strike fires

East Fork units responded to a wildfire at Kings Canyon and Kings View in Carson City that was caused by a thundercell that passed through Western Nevada on Saturday evening.

Units from Jacks Valley, Indian Hills, Genoa and Johnson Lane are responded to aid Carson firefighters.

According to the Sierra Front Wildfire Dispatch, the fire was first reported 4:57 p.m.

A thunderstorm crossing over Carson Valley was responsible for lightning strike calls at near Leviathan Mine and Duck Hill as well.

According to intelligence dispatcher Helen Frazier, there are several small lightning fires in the Bridgeport and Markleeville areas. All of those fire are staffed or are in remote areas.

According to the National Weather Service, thunderstorm outflows are causing strong wind gusts of 40-50 mph, with local gusts of up to 55 mph through 5:30 p.m.

Radar is indicating the storm developed over the Sierra and is traveling north.
